- Belonging. Let's be honest. It's a word that connotes of warm and fuzzy feeling. Sentimental even. And many characterize belonging at work as a "nice to have", but not actually important for good business. For those who may be leaning in that direction, let me share a couple of key facts with you that you can use in making the case. Belonging promotes productivity and engagement. A study feature in the Harvard Business Review found that employees that experience belonging at work report a 56% increase in job performance and a 75% reduction in sick days. I would say those numbers definitely surpassed the nice to have category. A strong sense of belonging also supports retention. As people investigated the great resignation of 2020 and '21, researchers discovered that the number two reason employees cited for leaving or even considering leaving was that they lacked a sense of belonging at work.
