My personal why
- Here's my story. I'm originally from Detroit, Michigan. And I love being from Detroit because so many of the people who grew up around me were Black like me. I like to joke that it's the Wakanda of the United States. It was an amazing thing to grow up with people who shared my heritage and my cultural background, the low income, middle income, and very high-income people I knew were mostly Black. I went to a high school with 4,500 gifted and talented students, and 80% of them were Black. Then I got a scholarship to attend an elite boarding school in Massachusetts, which was overwhelmingly white. As I left Detroit, I started to realize that people had all these stereotypes about Black people. They would say things like, "Black people don't ski." And I would think, "I'm from Michigan. "Black people have ski clubs." I remember thinking, "Wow, people are really ignorant," and I didn't mean it in a pejorative way.…
