- Rituals develop in every grouping of people, whether it's tribes, cultures, neighborhoods, or yes, work teams. They're how we signal membership in the group. They're how we emphasize what's important about our interactions with each other. Rituals can be small, like special handshakes, or they can be large, like promotion ceremonies. They can even be odd-sounding at first, like the infamous Walmart cheer that used to finish off every morning meeting at every store in the world. Managers would lead the team through a round of, "Give me a W," and spell out the company's name ending in, "What's that spell," Walmart. "Who's number one," the customer always. But in each case, once people understand the ritual and the meaning behind it, they feel like insiders and they feel more ready to trust other insiders. And once they trust each other, they're more willing to talk about their particular preferences, and differences, and more likely to see others as true colleagues, even if they…
