The percentile
- My friend's daughter just received her SAT results. So my friend called me to say she scored 1,340 points. "Wait, what does that mean?", I asked her. Well, her result is approximately 90th percentile, which is amazing. She'll go to the best college. But what is the 90th percentile? It means she's better than 90% of other students that took the SAT test. Whoa, that's really great result. Percentile tells us how value compares to other values. The general rule is that if value X is in the Kth percentile, than X is greater than K percent of the values. Let's look at one more example. A person has an IQ of 130, and we say this person is at 98 percentile. What does that mean? It means that their IQ is higher than 98% of other people. What is interesting to know is that the median is a special case of percentile. We say that the median or second quartile, Q2, is the 50th percentile, meaning the values of 50% of the data…
