Another area that I find very compelling for cybersecurity is indeed data mining. Now, I'm always disappointed or frequently disappointed when I find that various entities are claiming to do data mining, and what they're really doing is just statistics. Allow me to elaborate the difference. Data mining. I'm trying to get previously unknown, valid and actionable information. Let me put it this way. Let's assume that you are the world's best at statistics and at database queries. You know SQL better than anyone. You are still only going to be able to retrieve answers to the questions you pose. Data mining incorporates machine learning to look for patterns that you might not have ever thought to ask about. You might get new answers to questions you didn't even ask. Now, notice it says extracting information from large data. One of the things that makes data mining work is to have the largest set of data you possibly can, the bigger, the better.
