Understanding partial correlations
- [Instructor] The SPSS regression procedure calculates two very different kinds of correlations for us: part and partial. Understanding the difference between the two is critical in understanding the difference between the simultaneous regression strategy and the hierarchical regression strategy. So let's begin with partial, but not inside the Regression menus, but inside the Correlation menus. So if we go to Analyze, Correlate, let's go to Bivariate for just a moment, to refresh our memories as to the magnitude of the relationship between retail and waste and then restaurants and waste. So there you go, our standard correlation, what is sometimes called the zero order correlation, of retail with waste, is about .8, a little bit less, actually, and with restaurants and waste, again, about .8, a tad more than eight. So try to kind of remember those numbers, it will help us put the rest in perspective. Now we're gonna return to the Correlate menu, but go to Partial, and here's where it…
