- It was the tail end of '63, and employee morale had just hit bottom in a Wooster Massachusetts insurance firm. A recent merger had everyone on edge, and the company's fresh-faced head of PR. Joy Young had an idea. In classic Mad Men's style, she arrived at the doors of Harvey Ball Advertising with sketch in hand, a circle with a U-shaped smile that applied to buttons was bound to lift the firm's free decor. Harvey was unconvinced a few dissenters wouldn't wear them upside down with a frown so two dots from his marker, and the smile had eyes. With a scant fee of $40, Harvey's work was done, about 20 bucks per dot, and a billion smiley face buttons, shirts, stickers, coffee mugs, and an avalanche of other sundry goods. There is no shelter on Earth that has escaped the echo of those two dots in some iteration, and to no one's surprise, they resurrected again, with unbridled zeal in this year's report.
