Radar sweep
- When I think about technology and designers, I'm probably musing on the latest app or update and how its novel function will drive next year's trend report. I was particularly pleased as I looked at this trend and contemplated whose digital wizardry inspired a sweeping gradient with an obvious breakpoint, a line that serves as the wall between dark and light. It was then that it hit me: radar. No good submarine film would hit the market without a little of this blip. That blip, but I believe that was actually sonar, but close enough, was when the radar sweep would pick up on a heavy hail or an incoming torpedo. But graphically, the circular gradient slowed to fade from the PPI screen, or plan position indicator, really, that's what you call it, came about from a guy named Philo Farnsworth in about 1940.
