- As much as I love symbols and symbolism, even I am astounded from time to time as I research these courses. We're about to talk about arrows as a graphic device in logos. You know those arrows that cavemen used to draw in caves, or the Egyptians used in their hieroglyphics, or maybe the Romans used to direct their legions across the empire. Huh. The arrow didn't even show up as a graphic device until the 18th century. Really! Up until that time, and starting at the earliest 13th century, was the manicule, these things, and mostly used in early manuscripts to point out something. That was it. These are the first pointers. I guess there just wasn't a lot of telling people where they ought to go back then. And when the arrow did come into play as a directional symbol, it was first used by a diagram illustrator to explain the direction of water flow.
