- Just because someone exhibits poor behavior at work, doesn't mean that you as the manager will be able to let them go, not unless things are properly documented. One of the tasks you pick up when you join the leadership team is documenting performance. You have to do it to support decisions you'll make when employees deserve praise and promotions or other awards, and you have to do it to support more difficult decisions, such as terminations. Believe it or not, even in the face of very difficult behaviors, it's common for managers to neglect documenting problematic behavior. Sometimes they think they are simply too busy to immediately address the issue. Assuming the behavior in question is not extreme, they say to themselves, I see that's an issue but I'm busy, or I'll get to it later. And then they lose interest and forget to follow-up.
