Develop an agile learner skill set

In the past, you might have been trained in a specific field, whether it was being a project manager or a car mechanic, doctors, lawyers, accountants. There used to be a lot of work roles that were pretty static. The work you were trained for early on might still be pretty similar decades later. But that world doesn't exist anymore. Work changes often and dramatically. Sure, there are still some people doing work that may not be continually transformed like installing air conditioning or fixing car engines. But even those roles will keep changing too. Many car mechanics, for example, are looking more and more like technicians as cars become more like rolling computers. So how do we deal with a world where the work we do tomorrow may be radically different from the work we do today? In my course, Developing a Learning Mindset in the Age of AI, I explain that there are really three legs of the stool that can help us continually adapt in a world of exponential change. Those three components are mindset, skill set, and toolset. In this course, we're going to focus on that skill set for learning agility. Why do we call this agility? Here's a simple example. You're walking down the sidewalk and you're just about to step into a hole you didn't see. If you're not agile, you might just go ahead and put your foot in the hole, maybe twisting your ankle. But if you have an agile skill set, you can hop over it or dodge to the side. Whatever is the best strategy in the split second, you have to decide. That's what learning agility is. You're heading in one direction and suddenly you need to pivot or hop onto a different path. Maybe you thought your job was pretty static. Along comes a big change at your organization, and suddenly your work could change dramatically. If you're an agile learner, if you have the skill set for continuous adaptation, you can simply open up a new pathway for learning. We'll also talk about the toolset that's often called AI. Sometimes it's known as generative artificial intelligence or large language models. That toolset helps us to create text, images, audio, and video in new ways. And it turns out that an AI toolset can help us to develop that learning skill set more rapidly and more effectively. You can do an AI-assisted skills inventory. You can use AI tools to enhance your creative learning processes. You can use AI tools to come up with alternative learning methods to improve the quality of your learning. In fact, I've included a list of AI tools that you might want to explore to use with this course. A learning skill set powered by an AI toolset can help you become an agile learner, no matter how your work changes in the future.
