The basic lighting kit

- The equipment you need for any film or video project varies based on what you're trying to achieve and what you can afford. Big movies and TV shows shooting on location will have whole trucks full of lighting and grip gear and half a dozen electricians and grips just to operate all of it. But a documentarian might have no lights at all. Now, for most of this course, we're going to be working with a reasonably small kit of gear that could fit in the back of an SUV and handled by one or two people. This is the kit that I use when I'm shooting interviews and small interior scenes. You can see a lot more detail on the operation of individual pieces in my course, Video Lighting and Grip Basics. Now, when you light up people's faces, it's a good idea to start with a big, soft light source and then use harder, more controllable lights for the accents. This is the kit I use every day.
