Controlling shadows with fill light
- As we discussed earlier, fill light is the light that fills the shadows. Like key light and back light, it's not a kind of a light fixture, but rather a job that a light does. The less fill light you have, the darker your shadows are and the more contrast your image has. Not enough fill light can be unflattering or overdramatic, but too much fill light can flatten out your subject, and nobody wants that. Often in a real world situation, there's plenty of fill light just from the ambient light that's bouncing around the room. But if you need to add a light to fill the shadows, it should be a relatively soft light coming from right above the camera so the shadows fall behind the subject. And it should be a light you can control with scrims or diffusion or a dimmer so you can adjust the fill level to taste. You just want to lighten the dark shadows cast by the key light.
