How rsync works
- [Instructor] On the surface, Rsync is a command line tool that copies files from one place to another. It's good at that, and we can use it as a replacement for the regular cp or copy command in most situations. However, Rsync has superpowers. One of these superpowers is the ability to check whether a file being copied is the same on the source and the destination. If the destination file is the same as the one in the source, Rsync knows that it doesn't need to waste time copying the same information that already exists in the destination. In addition to copying files locally on one system, Rsync can also copy files across the network using either its own protocol or a remote shell like SSH. It can compress data that it sends from the source to the destination, saving a little bit of time and bandwidth, but a major part of what makes Rsync so powerful is its Delta-transfer algorithm.
