Opening the sample model
- [Instructor] Most of the exercise files in this course are based on a sample model that comes with Revit. So in this video I want to show you how to access the sample model. This model is included in the full version of the software, but not with Revit LT. However, it is available from the Autodesk website. I'll show you both ways to access it in this video. If you're using the full version of Revit, you may see a link to the sample model labeled as Sample Architectural, right here on your home screen. So for me, it is this one over here on the far right, and you could see the label, Architectural, right there. Now if you don't see it here on your home screen, you could still access it directly from the software. You just simply need to get to the main user interface of Revit which you can do using this icon at the top of the screen here. This is the home icon, and you can use the Control + D keyboard shortcut if you prefer. That will display the ribbon interface and the file menu. Go to the file menu, highlight, but don't click the open item, and that will expand a submenu on the right. If you click open, it's going to display a dialogue box. That's not what we want, so hover over open, the submenu appears, and then down here you will see the sample files item. Now if you do this in the full version of Revit Snowdon Towers Sample Architectural will be right here in this folder. You can simply click it and click open and you're in the file. If you do this in Revit LT, you won't find the file in that location. So in that case, you'll need to download it from the Autodesk website instead. And I'm going to show you how to do that now. Now, one last point, when you open Snowdon Towers Architectural, it will come up with a message that tells you that you need to open the file read-only, that's perfectly fine, just go ahead and accept that choice to open the file as a read-only file. If you do not have access to the files directly in Revit, for example, you're using Revit LT, then you can open up your web browser and navigate to autodesk.com and download it from that location. You will find an entry on that page labeled Snowdon Towers. And under that entry you will see several files listed here. Now we primarily need the architectural file, but I do recommend that you go ahead and download the other disciplines listed here as well, because each of those is linked into the architectural file. So simply download all of those to your desktop or some other convenient folder, and then from Revit LT, you can use the open command and browse to that downloaded location, and then you should be seeing exactly the same thing as I see on my screen. In some cases, I will have pre-saved the file and provided it as an exercise file. So in those cases, you can use my provided exercise file in either Revit or Revit LT just fine, so no additional steps necessary.
