Gradient layer mask within a shape

Following on from our previous discussion of gradient layer masks, I'm going to use a gradient layer mask to create this composite fruit. But there's an added twist or a couple of twists to this example. So my starting files are an apple and an orange. There are different sizes and I want to drag the bigger onto the smaller. General rule of thumb is while we can scale down we want to avoid as much as possible scaling up. So with my move tool I'll drag the orange on top of the apple and then press command or control T to put a transformation rectangle around it and then scale it down so that it's an equivalent size. Now we'll turn that off and I'm going to make a selection of the Apple. I'll come to one of my selection tools, my quick selection tool in this case, and then just click on select subject.
