Making the unbelievable real with VFX
- The visual effects industry wasn't born overnight. It evolved naturally from the desires of the very earliest motion picture filmmakers, as they tried to transport their audiences to places they could never go. A great example of this comes from French filmmaking pioneer George Melies. In his groundbreaking film A Trip to the Moon, he uses an incredible combination of live action shots, animation, miniatures, and matte paintings that tell the tale of a trip to the moon. With the development of powerful computers, software, and digital techniques, the term visual effects has evolved over the years from the idea of special effects. Prior to computers, special effects were divided into two categories, optical effects, or illusions created in the camera, and practical or mechanical effects, those created on set using props and devices that are shot with the camera.
