IPv4 address classes
- [Instructor] Every IP version four address falls into one of five different categories or five different classes. Now the class of an IP version four address doesn't change. Even if we change a subnet mask, we want to break up this one network into additional networks we could do that by playing with the subnet mask. That doesn't effect the class of address that we have. The class is entirely dependent on the value in the very first portion of that IP version four address. For example, consider a class A address. A class A address in the first octet, remember an octet, that's the first grouping of eight bits, we have something dot something dot something dot something. Well it's that first number, that first decimal number before the first dot. That's called the first octet. And if the number in that octet is in the range of one through 126, it's a class A address.
