Graphic design is rarely one thing. One idea can be influencing graphic design in one country or city, while another idea is prevalent in another. While the new wave thrived in Los Angeles, London, San Francisco, and New York, grunge and a DIY aesthetic evolved in Seattle. In the 1980s and 90s, Seattle thrived as a center of creativity, creativity, not only in the realm of music, but also in design. This was the era when iconic grunge bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden rose to fame. Grunge was gritty, raw, unpolished, and loud. Design, as always, adopted the same and created a new aesthetic. One of the key figures in shaping the unique design style of that era was the legendary art Chantry, who moved to Seattle in the 1970s.
