Brutalism
Over the last 10 years, graphic designers reinvented Brutalism. In architecture, Brutalism began as a movement in the 1950s. It was Modernism taken to the extreme with rigorous focus on the function, purpose, and honesty in materials. Architects treated the materials with reverence. Unpainted raw concrete exposed the texture of the construction method. The design had no sentimentality or sense of nostalgia. As we discussed a few times, design doesn't happen in a vacuum. It is a product of its time and place. Minimalism addressed the chaos of the rise of the internet and increase of information. Contemporary brutalism is the product of several factors. First, political, social, cultural, and racial issues through the 2010s and into this decade led to a profound need for a unique voice for a new generation of designers.
