Uncover misleading statistics
- One area where you'll likely find a lot of questions is by looking at statistics. They aren't a replacement for facts. Statistics can be misleading. Actually, a lot of statistics lie, or at the very least, they tell a different version of the truth. There are many ways that you can use statistics to tell a story that you want to tell. Some of them are a bit more subtle. One of these is statistical inference. It's when you create a statistical connection with one story and then you link that to another story. Let's say that a study comes out that says that 20% of the texts you receive come from people who are driving. A company that's trying to sell car insurance might come out with an ad that says, One in five people text while driving. Make sure that you have good insurance. Notice the difference between the study and the ad. One statistic tells a story about text messages. About 20% of texts come from people who are driving.
