The tools of the trade: paper, pens, ink

- The materials you'll be using if you're following along in this course are very simple: paper, pen, and ink. And you'll need a few other items to help prepare your writing surface. A list of these materials and sources for them are in your exercise files. For this course, we'll be writing with a broad edged pen. The broad edge refers to the edge of the nib. The nib is the part of the pen which extends from the holder. The edge of the nib is what touches the paper when we write. Next, our writing surface. We're going to be writing on good, smooth paper that's made especially for calligraphy. A good writing surface is important. The edge of your nib should glide smoothly on the paper, and the ink should flow out evenly. I recommend paper that is smooth, but not too slick. You need just a bit of tooth to grip and capture the ink without bleeding. The right paper will give you better control of your pen.
