Essence of 5S
- [Instructor] "When human behavior enters the equation, things go non-linear." That's a quote by Neil Degrass Tyson, the famous astrophysicist. How do human behaviors tie into 5S? Just in Time manufacturing, or JIT, is one of the pillars of Lean. JIT is a system designed to deliver the right quantity at the right time to a customer with no waste consistently. Hiroyuki Hirano, one of the main figures in developing JIT, understood that no matter how much tension is given to a process, humans are prone to making mistakes. So, in part, he helped establish 5S as a way to create behaviors in support of JIT. So what underlying behaviors are needed? First and foremost, safety is a foundational behavior that underpins 5S in any workplace.
