- The goal of leading yourself is to make you and your boss more successful, not to diminish or replace them. So, you don't want to go up to your boss saying, "I don't need your help, because I'm leading myself!" That's pretty self-absorbed and probably not entirely true, and it's going to make your boss feel like they aren't doing a good job or they aren't appreciated. You want to do the opposite! You want to show that you're self-aware and disciplined, and that you know exactly what kind of support you need. One of the most effective ways you can lead up is to make a specific request for support. Most bosses want you to feel supported, but it's your job to show them how! When you make a request, you should spell out exactly what help you need, why they're the person who can help you, and what's at stake.
