- Years ago, there was a commercial for long-distance calling with the tagline, "It's the next best thing to being there." The truth is, webcams create the next best thing to being there. When we are meeting virtually, by definition, not everyone is there. So my advice in short on webcams is this, turn them on. As soon as we can see each other, our communication has the chance to be richer and more successful. Now we have the visual clues to better understand each other's messages and have a sense of what each other are thinking and more. But beyond my generic, turn them on recommendation, there is more we need to discuss about this useful tool. Use them regularly and not just in meetings. When people have the chance to turn on their webcam with a single person and start to get used to them in that environment and see the value that comes from the improved communication, they will be more comfortable with turning them on…
