- Earlier, we talked about building the muscle of distress tolerance. But what happens when you get hit with anxiety in the middle of the workday? here are three simple ways to calm your anxiety when it strikes. Number one, breathe. Breathing is an essential tool for managing your anxiety, especially when panic strikes. Our inhale activates the sympathetic nervous system, which revs us. And our exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system, calming us down. Dr. Christine Runyan says, "Like a dimer switch on a light." This extended exhale lessens many of the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as increased heart rate, and high blood pressure. Good breathing starts with good posture.
