- Let's say you work for an American sporting goods company and are sent to China as head of brand management. Or, you're Brazilian, a rising star for a European chemical company, and are sent to Singapore to manage operations in Southeast Asia. Both of these are examples of expatriate assignments. The term Expatriate refers to an employee sent on an extended assignment to a location outside their home country. Historically, expatriate assignments were almost exclusively reserved for people from the home country sent to manage foreign subsidiaries. But, today, it's common for a manger from one foreign country to be sent as an expatriate to another foreign country.
