- When I was young, I worked for a leader who helped me see myself differently. He made me believe in myself. He showed me that I was capable of much more than I thought at first. If you've ever experienced this for yourself, you may have worked for a transformational leader. A few decades ago, James McGregor Burns wrote a book titled simply "Leadership," where he contrasted a more traditional approach with what he labeled transformational leadership. Old fashioned transactional leaders, as he called them, expected good performance from their followers in exchanged the leaders provided things like fair pay, a safe work environment, and a general sense of belonging to the team. Transactional leaders use a system of clear rewards and punishments to motivate their people, and it's true that transactional leaders can be effective.
