- There's a saying about work. Employees don't leave companies, they leave managers, and there's some truth to that. Studies over the decades show that the number one predictor of workplace satisfaction is the quality of an employee's relationship with their supervisor. In other lessons, we've already seen this relationship skill mentioned as an isolated element, but the relational approach to leadership goes all in on the power of relationships as the key variable that separates average leaders from great ones. Some people call the relationship side of leadership soft skills, or human skills. These labels always sell the idea short, but the terms we use are far less important than the benefits. Studies and practical experience both show that high-quality relationships between supervisors and subordinates result in higher job satisfaction, team spirit, productivity, performance, and lower turnover.
