- Picture it, it was the 1950s. The dominant school of thought on leadership was you were either a born leader or you weren't. This all-or-nothing approach didn't sit well with researchers from Ohio State, the University of Michigan, and others. These teams shifted the focus from the belief in the concept of a born leader to a behavioral or a skills-based approach to leadership. Their studies concluded that leadership in action was learnable. Since then, we've been distilling all the possible leadership skills we might develop down to a list that leaders should develop in today's world. The first part of the leadership skillset is all about task-driven skills and communication. Leaders who lean heavily in this direction are called task-oriented or production-oriented leaders. These leaders show competence in their own skills and focus on the technical aspects of employees' work. They initiate plans, employees follow.
