- I recently took part in a tricky rebranding process at a nonprofit organization. Many of its members were attached to the old image, so leaders included everybody in a year-long change process. We asked a diverse team to provide input on a new logo, tagline, and color scheme. We did surveys, hosted conversations, and showed numerous early drafts to almost everybody in the organization to get plenty of feedback before we made the final decisions. When we finally made the big reveal, we all held our breath as we waited for reactions. The team was practicing inclusive leadership. In a professional setting, the essence of inclusive leadership is the commitment to include a wide variety of voices, especially in big decisions. A truly inclusive leader values a process with maximum participation as the key measure of success. They assume that if they manage the process well, other good outcomes will take care of themselves.
