- One of my favorite supervisors from back in the day always made it a point to ask for our opinions. She sat down with us, listened, and tested new ideas through discussion. She demonstrated a clear democratic leadership style. In terms of characteristics, democratic leaders have a 'two heads are better than one' philosophy. They have one key goal, to make the best decision possible. They believe the way to do that is to actively seek input and feedback from followers. Have you ever worked for a leader like this, and would you consider them effective? Without feedback, democratic leaders are concerned that they'll grow out of touch and not realize how their decisions are influencing others, especially the people who have to implement those decisions. They also know that when followers see their input shaping decisions, they'll feel more ownership and be more committed.
