Projection in action
- Part of presence is how leaders project themselves, what they do, what they say, and how they say it. Their actions are genuine, authentic. They showcase the leader's unique best qualities and characteristics. It's the opposite of imitating one standardized way of doing things. Great writers write great differently. Great singers sing great differently. It's the same with presence. Different leaders are genuine in different ways. Here's an example. When herb Kelleher was CEO of Southwest Airlines, they used a marketing slogan, "Just Plane Smart." They didn't know a small aviation company, Stevens Aviation, already claimed the phrase years earlier. Stevens threatened to sue. Southwest might win with its much bigger budget and legal team. But Southwest brand was against the typical ways of using corporate power. Back then, Southwest strived for emotional connection with people. Their ticker symbol was LUV, love.…
