How to deliver authentic, effective apologies
- How you apologize matters. The context and circumstances in our workplaces also matter. Apologizing in a timely manner makes a difference. It's best not to wait to apologize, and it's never too late to apologize to a team member for something you did wrong. When apologizing to another person, it should be a one-on-one interaction, unless there are several individuals you have negatively impacted. How you apologize also depends on how well you know the team member and the best way in which you think they might be able to receive the apology. Consider the following options. Face-to-face, either in person, or over video. Written form, either in an email, text or a handwritten note with a follow-up conversation. Over the phone, where you pick up the phone and call and potentially leave a message if they don't answer. A person who has been harmed by your actions may not want to meet or talk to you live.
