- The job description, or JD, is typically your first point of contact with your desired role. In one to two pages, it helps you understand what the role entails and what the hiring managers are looking for. A JD generally starts with a job summary, followed by responsibilities, requirements, and prefer qualifications, if any. You might notice, however, that JDs often sound fluffy. There's a lot of extraneous words and phrases. For example, what does fast learner who deeply understands business processes even mean? How about a commercial mindset with practical business experience? Phrases like these are common, leaving candidates even more confused as to how they should prepare. It's in your best interest, therefore, to identify the key words and phrases in a JD that tangibly highlight what the hiring manager is looking for versus some abstract concept so you can optimize the rest of your interview prep.
