Road map basics in Jira Cloud and Data Center
Roadmaps, or more accurately now, plans in Jira Cloud and Data Center, are a way you can show projected progress on one or more projects. This is a long-range planning feature, and it's all centered around a visual chart, which is essentially an interactive Gantt chart. Gantt charts have been used in the project management world for ages. two-dimensional plot with time on the x-axis and planned work on the y-axis. Bars on the chart indicate when a particular work item is projected to start and when it's projected to finish. The full feature within JIRA can also act as a planning sandbox, so to speak. You can make changes on your projections within a plan and those changes don't actually update any issues in JIRA until you want them to. The use of epics is not required to take advantage of this feature in Jira, but there's a lot of functionality provided to support epics as roll-up parent issues.
