Creating and laying out dashboards
Before we get hands-on and create a dashboard in JIRA, let's get an overview of what they are. Dashboards are just views in JIRA, a screen, that act as information radiators. They contain and display some number of gadgets. Each gadget is essentially its own small report or chart that provides select information. You decide what gadgets on a dashboard are and configure them to display the data you want. Dashboards are very good for at-a-glance, all on a single page, status and data information of one or more JIRA projects. Dashboard gadgets can be set up to auto-refresh as well, so you can use them for real-time status wallboards in team rooms. I haven't seen them used in that capacity for software development teams, but I've seen dashboards as real-time wall boards used to great effect on other types of efforts, like in a war room for a major go-live event.
