- Virtual private networks encrypt data from a user's computer to the office, or cloud resources. I had an experience with a client that allowed many users to connect using VPN to their large distribution office. This worked fine for a while, but when one staff member allowed their child to install a game on one of the company laptops, it introduced a malware that went directly from the laptop into the corporate network, which took the entire network down. It took three days for my team to root out all the malware, and get them back up and running. And it costs the company over a million dollars a day to be out of business. They could have easily invested a few thousand dollars to properly secure their network, to avoid this from happening. So what did they do wrong and how do you avoid it?
