- [Instructor] Welcome to this lesson on data retention policies. In this lesson, we're going to talk about four things. The first one is key objectives of data retention. The next thing is going to be some cost management strategies. After that, we'll talk about a few compliance regulations that are relevant to data retention, and then finally we'll talk about some best practices and security. There are two main objectives to the design of your data retention policies, and those are operational needs and compliance requirements. The problem is that in some cases, these two objectives can almost be in direct competition with each other. So it's very much a balancing act to determine exactly where your retention needs to be, but no longer. So the reason for that is because we have this little scale here, and if we design our data retention policies to be too small, then the risk that we're facing is that we're going to be losing critical data.
