Data deletion, archiving, and legal hold
- [Instructor] Welcome to this lesson on data deletion, archiving, and legal hold. In this lesson, we'll first talk about some data deletion procedures and mechanisms. And then we'll talk about the same thing when it comes to data archiving. And then finally, we'll talk about some legal concepts. So first of all, when it comes to data deletion procedures and mechanisms, an important standard to be aware of is the NIST SP 800-88, which has guidelines for media sanitization. Within this standard, we can look at three specific terms for different types of mechanisms we have for getting rid of data. The first one is clearing data. And this is where we erase visible data. So an example of this is going to be emptying the recycling bin on your computer. The problem with this is that, even though we are telling the operating system that that data is no longer there, it technically is until another piece of data comes along to overwrite that storage location.
