How this course is taught
- [Instructor] This course is divided into eight different chapters with multiple sessions in each chapter. Because this is an introductory course to Stata we'll look at a wide range of different topics including how to start Stata for the first time, how to explore data, how to graph data, and how to perform various statistical analyses. Each session generally starts with an overview of the main learning outcomes and what commands are going to be used in that session. Where applicable, we might also explore some statistical concepts to ensure that you understand any associated output. In this course we'll only use two data sets, both are training data sets and the idea is to ensure that you obtain familiarity with both as we proceed through the course. The auto training data is a small data set that looks at car prices and auto car characteristics in the United States in 1978. It is a small data set but perfect for initial training needs. The second data set is a National Longitudinal Survey of Women of 1988, often shortened to NLSW88. This data set is a larger data set and focuses on the labor market characteristics of women, aged thirties and forties, in the United States, in 1988. This data set is around 30 times larger than the auto data and contains somewhat challenging variables. We're going to be using this data set in our challenge sessions. Finally, each session has an associated do-file. To aid you each session will have the annotated code that contains all the relevant Stata code that we use in that particular session. Now, let's go get started and open Stata for the first time.
