Distributional analysis (graphical)
- Examining how a variable is distributed is an important part of understanding your data, and helps avoid mistakes later on. For example, by exploring the distribution of a variable, you'll be able to identify whether your data is evenly spread out, or when it is concentrated somewhere. Likewise, you may want to know whether you have long tails, perhaps to the right or to the left, or even both ways. In practice, I always explore the distribution of key variables before I do anything with them. So in this session we'll explore how we can use Stata's graphing ability to visualize distributions. We won't have time to explore everything, but we will have a look at some of the most commonly used ways. We'll explore a few commands in this session, and their names are pretty obvious. This includes how to create histograms, quantile plots, box plots, and kernel density plots. So let's go off to Stata, and let's have a look.…
