- [Narrator] In order to hold our composites together we need adhesives. Another name for adhesive is a resin system. We have three main adhesive types and there are several properties that you need to be aware of with all adhesives. These properties are adhesion, mechanical toughness and resistance to degradation. The adhesive types are films, pastes and foams. Film adhesives or prepregs are structural adhesives which are generally supplied as a thin film supported on a release paper and stored under refrigerated conditions. Film materials are frequently supported by fibers that serve to improve handling of the films prior to cure. These films can help control adhesive flow during bonding and assist in bond line thickness control. Fibers can be incorporated as short fiber mats with random orientation or as woven cloth, typically nylon or polyesters. What we have next are paste adhesives which are used as an alternative to…
