- [Instructor] Let's talk about the pivot step. Pivoting transposes rows to columns or vice versa, allowing you to create either wide or tall tables. Often data is not the right shape for consumption by users. While Tableau often prefers data to be long rather than wide, long data may be to normalize, to analyze outside of Tableau, so a different layout may be required. The pivot step allows us to transform this data easily and quickly Inside Tableau Prep. Let's talk about adding a pivot step. To add a pivot step, hit the plus sign on the right hand side of your last step that you have in your flow, from the dropdown choose the pivot step. Now you can also pivot directly in other steps by highlighting fields inside your profile pane, right clicking and choosing Pivot Columns to Rows. This will automatically add a pivot step after the step that you're on, but I personally prefer just adding it using the normal plus sign. I feel that it gives me a little bit more control.
