Shipping and receiving

- When speaking about warehouse and distribution center activities, most people use the term shipping and receiving. After all, that's what they do, take in materials and goods and then send them out. But there's more to it than that. Basically, these facilities perform five logistics activities to move goods through the system. First is receiving. Materials and finished goods arrive, inventory is processed and accounted for. Then comes storage. Software applications like a warehouse management system or WMS, allocate space and record where the inventory is kept. When an order is placed, the picking process begins. All items in that order are selected and grouped for shipment. Nowadays, this is being done more and more by robots and automated systems.
