- You may be pricing out every project you work on with a SME or working within a company where you never charge for your services. Just in case you are in the first category, here are a few of my tips on pricing your work. How you charge for your instructional design is always a personal decision related to your skills, experience, your career goals, the complexity of the project and the SME, and the area in which you do business, among what's probably many other factors. I can't give you a simple formula of what you should charge a client, however, these are the things that I keep in mind. First, a pricing conversation is really a conversation about the scope of the project, so you have to intimately understand scope before your pricing can be accurate. I usually separate the scope of work first discussion from a final pricing discussion, unless pricing has been prearranged upfront.
