Pre-attentive vs. attentive processing
- The facts of the last lesson might feel overwhelming. I mean, five seconds is not a long time to garner the primary attention of your audience. But what if I told you that there was a science to it? A simple set of tools that you can always deploy to make sure that that five seconds count. You see, while our attention spans flow between two unique stages, our brains capture information in a similar two-stage flow called the pre-attentive and the attentive processes, both of which occur during our five second initial attention span phase. The preattentive process happens at the onset of our initial attention span stage, occurring in the first 1/10th of a second. In that exceptionally short period of time, your subconscious mind catalogs specific visual cues, including iconography, scale, color usage, patterns, unique text treatments, and information hierarchy.
