Understanding inclusivity
- [Narrator] Diversity, equity, inclusion. Do these terms all mean the same thing? Can we use them interchangeably? The terms diversity, equity, and inclusion often appear together in the acronym DEI, but each word means something unique. It's important to understand the difference between the terms to make inclusive design choices. Let's look at each word individually. Diversity refers to the presence of people from varied backgrounds and experiences in the areas of race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, language, ability, age, religious commitment, political perspective, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. Seeking the involvement of diverse people is a good step, but this strategy will fall short on its own. Effective strategy incorporates equity and inclusion efforts too. Equity involves looking at an organization's systems, policy, procedures, and culture to see what is enabling unfair practices.
