- The more time we spend being brave and moving outside our comfort zone, the more likely we're unintentionally going to offend someone. The second principle of an inclusive mindset, is to be humble in these situations. Now, here are a few examples of comments you may have heard before. Notice your reaction as you hear each one. Where are you from? Oh me, I'm from Chicago. No, I mean, where are you really from? This situation illustrates a fundamental misunderstanding that assumes that you can tell where someone's from by the way that they look. But in most countries, there are people who have been there for generations from all different kinds of racial and ethnic backgrounds. So for them, asking where they are really from indicates that you don't believe the answer that they gave, and that you see them as a perpetual foreigner in their own country.
