Get real with expectations
- There's a great equation that goes, if E is greater than R, then R equals D. In other words, if your expectations are greater than your reality, then your reality will always lead to disappointment. Let that sink in. Unrealistic expectations of yourself and others can only stifle talent and progress. I want to help you lead with conscious expectations so for this lesson, I want to give you some exercises for how you can get out of disappointment, be present and lead with confidence. To start, you must be present in your reality. For instance, when I was an HR assistant I applied for leadership roles I believed I was qualified for, but in reality, I just wasn't ready. I mean, I literally set myself up for disappointment. Don't let this be you. Be conscious of where you are now and how you can better prepare for your goals. These steps will positively guide you in the right direction. Next, don't be overzealous, time is on your side, so use it wisely. Being excessively eager is a sure-fire way for you to make unconscious decisions, which in return leads to more mistakes and unintentional disappointments. Whenever eagerness is getting the best of you like your thoughts and actions, just slow down so you can make intentional decisions. Also, don't self-sabotage, don't stretch yourself so thin that you snap. A great action for you to remember is to consistently give yourself time to wind down and relax so you can make better choices and ultimately achieve your goals. Finally, a great way to have conscious expectations is to reflect on your accomplishments. Remember how much work you've put into your journey so far. Look, we can sometimes forget how much work it took us to get where we are, that work doesn't stop, but you can rely on your past experiences to help guide your expectations. Practicing conscious expectations in your professional life will trickle down into your personal life as well. Leading with clear and honest expectations is a great way to stay even-keeled even when things may go awry.
